A FILM fan turned podcast host who has interviewed the Oscar-winning editor of The Revenant is looking to support Bolton-based film-makers.

Joe Brown, from Lostock, began writing film reviews for an Instagram account back in May as something to focus on during lockdown.

The account soon had over 3,000 followers so Joe decided to launch The Cinema Scope Podcast, now at the end of its first season.

He managed to secure an interview with writer and director Damian Fitzsimmons, a friend of his father, who currently lives and works in the US.

Joe made the most of these Hollywood connections and was then put in touch with those working behind the scenes of 2015 film The Revenant, which starred Leonardo DiCaprio.

The podcast host said: “I’ve always been into films and podcasting is massive at the moment.

“The aim of the show is to speak with upcoming film makers and editors to find out what goes on behind the scenes, but I actually ended up chatting with experienced editors in America.

“I loved hearing about their craft, when I spoke with Stephen Mirrione, the chief editor of The Revenant, it was incredible to find out what goes into making a film.

“These guys are at the top of their game so it’s pretty amazing.

“He was talking about Leonardo DiCaprio as if he was a friend, it was surreal.

“When a film comes out there’s loads of interviews with the director and the actors, but never with the editors, even though they shape what the audience sees.”

Joe gradated from the University of Hull this summer and has a part-time bar job, but it’s his dream to turn the podcast into a career.

He’s looking to focus his next season on film makers in Bolton and Greater Manchester.

Joe added: “I want to look at the independent side of cinema and shine a light on those who don’t usually get a lot of exposure.

“I think it’s a very strange time for cinema and it is impressive that this podcast has taken off when not many new films are being released.

“It’s worrying to think some cinemas may have to close this year, but there’s still such a strong appetite for going to the cinema.”
