GENEROUS staff and students at the University of Bolton raised £700 for Bolton Hospice by donating money collected from £1 meals sold to students during Bolton’s extra covid-19 lockdown restrictions.

Catering staff prepared hundreds of healthy meals for students, subsidised by the university, when the town was placed under the tougher guidance in September and October.

As eating and drinking inside a restaurant or café was not allowed, the university supported students in student accommodation or living independently by offering the £1-per-meal food service. The university also backed local businesses, offering a takeaway meal from a Bolton restaurant for £1, which is subsidised.

All the money collected has been donated to the hospice.

The university’s catering manager Karen Norton and chef Andrew Wright handed over the cheque for £700 to Bolton Hospice trustee Ian Savage.

In November, Darren Booth, the university’s head chef also made special remembrance poppy and ‘Pudsey Bear’ design cookies, which raised £200 for the Royal British Legion and £50 for BBC Children in Need.
