UNSUNG heroes have been recognised as the real stars of a Breightmet primary school for helping children continue their education in school during the coronavirus pandemic.

SS Osmund's and Andrew's RC Primary School organised a surprise socially-distanced ceremony for its cleaning staff to say a big thank you to them for their work during this challenging year.

The workers were celebrated as part of Unison’s Stars in Our School initiative, which shines a light on the difference its members play in the education of young people in Bolton.

And the cleaners were presented with a book filled with special messages penned by staff and pupils The team of four were also presented with balloons and chocolates in special gift bags.

Alicia Piri, the Unison Steward, said: "The school is undergoing a new extension, two classrooms, and the hall is being extended and the cleaners have kept the school clean throughout.

"You don't always see them but you know they are there and every day they sprinkle their message and get the job done."

Messages from the staff included: "We're very lucky to have them and they are always so friendly and helpful not to mention accommodating when we've had late meetings etc. You guys are awesome x"

And: "You are a wonderful team. We are very lucky to have you. Thank you.

Deputy headteacher Sharon Doyle said: "They have been absolutely amazing, when the country went into lockdown in M arch and when it was worrying time they did not hesitate about coming into school h when it was open for our key workers' children."

She added: "We managed to keep the event a surprise with great difficulty, with Alicia doing the wrapping at home and then managed to hide the presents behind a screen. We brought them in without them suspecting — and the star awards are so well deserved."

Jenny Williams of JWC cleaning company, contracted by the school, said: "It’s not just through the pandemic, and major building work, but through a 12 year relationship we have always strived to ensure the school is a hygienic and safe environment for the children to learn .

"It is important to me and my team that the school knows we are a key partner in the children’s education and to support the teaching team.

"My team always work hard to ensure school looks clean and tidy and I believe it creates a great culture to support the schools values.

"We provide a professional cleaning service with a dedicated team who are always prepared to go the extra mile."

Headteacher Jim Graves said: "Mrs Piri has done a marvellous job of co-ordinating all this. The whole school felt it was important to recognise what a wonderful job our cleaners do, especially in the pandemic. They are part of our team and their hard work makes our school so much better to work in. We are really proud of them and all of us, including our children, wanted to say thank you!”
