Bolton's coronavirus infection rate has increased again, according to the latest figures.

Data released by Public Health England for the seven days to December 27 show that Bolton's infection rate has increased, but still remains the lowest in Greater Manchester, and below the national average.

In the seven days to December 27 Bolton recorded 511 new positive coronavirus cases, equalling an infection rate of 177.7 per 100,000 people.

This is an increase on the previous seven days (to December 20) where the borough recorded 449 new cases at a rate of 156.1 per 100,000 residents.

Oldham is the only borough in Greater Manchester to record a lower coronavirus infection rate.

Its infection rate in the days to December 27 was 186 per 100,000, a significant fall from 203.3 in the days to December 20.

However, there have been large increases in the rest of Greater Manchester.

Stockport and Trafford are now recording the highest rates of infection despite historically recording the lowest for GM throughout the pandemic.

The infection rate in Stockport has jumped from 155.7 to 283.6 per 100,000 with it also spiking in Trafford from 182.4 to 261.2.

In a remote press conference today, Mayor of Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham revealed data from December 14 to 20 which found a quarter of new cases are from the new strain of Covid-19 but that figure is "probably" higher.

He also said the occupancy in intensive care and high dependency beds has increased in hospitals.

This comes after Bolton spent its first day under the strictest tier 4 restrictions for New Years Eve.
