Police are warning residents to stay away from the Rivington area due to poor conditions.

Chorley Police are urging people to stay away from Rivington for the rest of the weekend after snow and ice made for dangerous driving and walking conditions.

A number of roads could potentially be closed by police after a number of cars got stuck or slid off due to icy conditions.

Sheep House Lane, which leads to Belmont, was a particular problem for vehicles, with Chorley Police currently working with Lancashire County Council to look to close Sheep House Lane, Rivington Road (outside the Black Dog pub), Knowsley Lane, Higher House Lane and Dean Head Lane.

A Chorley Police spokesman said: "We are warning members of the public to stay away from the Rivington area tonight and the remainder of the weekend until weather conditions improve.

"A number of cars including some four-by-fours have got stuck in the Rivington area mainly on Sheep House Lane which leads to Belmont.

"Conditions are terrible and as you can see cars have been skidding off the road. Temperatures are set to go colder which would put people at further risk should they choose to go up there.

"We are currently linking in with Lancs County Council to set up some road closures. We are looking to close Sheep House Lane, Rivington Road (outside the Black Dog pub), Knowsley Lane, Higher House Lane and Dean Head Lane.

"The roads are currently being closed by the North West four-by-four response charity which have been helping to rescue some of the stuck cars. A big thanks to them.

"Please avoid Rivington until we advise you further."
