A man has been taken to hospital with a serious head injury after a crash in Westhoughton.

Police say a truck crashed into the back of a van that stopped due to a pedestrian, with the driver of the van now being treated in hospital.

The road traffic collision happened on Snydale Way, Westhoughton, between the Chequerbent Roundabout and the M61, around 11am.

One lane of traffic was closed until around 12:15pm to deal with the van, which had overturned, and treat the driver.

Pictures from police showed the van overturned with severe damage to the back of the vehicle whilst the truck also sustained some damage to its front.

The closure affected traffic heading towards Westhoughton from Bolton with bus routes having to be diverted.

Police say the driver of the truck was reported for "due care" for colliding with the back of the van.

A GMP Traffic Twitter post said: "RTC Snydale Way Bolton. The van stopped due to a pedestrian. The truck however did not.

"Driver of the van sustained a serious head injury and is currently being treated at hospital. Driver of truck reported for due care.

"Road down to one lane while we await recovery."

A spokesman for the North West Ambulance Service added: "We received a call reporting an RTC at 11:10.

"We’ve attended with one ambulance and taken a male patient with a head injury to hospital."
