THE sky is truly the limit for a charitable landlord from Bolton, as he has set his sights on a wing-walk to help benefit the local hospice.

Derek Gallagher, landlord of the Queen Elizabeth pub in Fletcher Street, says he has plans for the daredevil challenge, having recently given Bolton Hospice more than £3,000 for a charity headshave he took part in.

Derek, along with patrons Barry Byrom and Eugiene Doyle, took part in a charity headshave which was months in the making due to the ongoing series of lockdowns and coronavirus restrictions.

He said: "The head shave idea started off as a bit of a drunken prank but we realised that - having done a lot for charity - we could do it and raise money.

"I've always had shoulder length hair so it was very weird to just be going bald. We were initially going to do it in March but we had to keep pushing it back so my hair was just getting longer and longer."

The haircut itself took place some time ago in September - but Derek says the fundraiser went "ballistic", gathering £3,040 in both online and cash donations up until December, when he finally decided to hand over the huge sum.

Derek said he chose the hospice as he had friends and family stay in there.

After handing over the cash, Derek instantly set his sights on a new challenge and believes a wing walk could bring in more money for the hospice.

Wing walking is the act of moving along the wings of an aeroplane during flight, sometimes transferring between planes. It originated as a daredevil stunt, but is commonly used as a charitable endeavour for thrill-seeking individuals.

Derek said: "We don't know exactly when we will do it but we are thinking about doing it later in the year. I just like raising money for charity because I have lost a lot of my family, so it is good to do things like this."
