ACTION will be taken to improve a notorious junction after concerns were raised following a number of crashes at a busy junction in Horwich.

Three collisions were reported at the junction of Lee Lane, Winter Hey Lane and Longworth Road in just over a week, leading to growing fears over its safety.

Cars are reportedly frequently jumping the red lights at that point . And the 20mph limit is not followed by some motorists, it has been said.

Horwich Cllr Marie Brady reported the issue to Bolton Council, and the matter has been handled by Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM).

Cllr Brady said: “Some drivers who are queuing behind cars waiting to turn are then going through red lights and then there is traffic coming from the opposite direction.

“The bend in the road makes visibility difficult as well.

“The paths are narrow too so it can be frightening for a pedestrian walking past. It is all 20mph around there but that is not always being followed. The flow of the traffic is being looked at, and, of course, safety has got to be priority.”

TfGM said the situation at the junction has been assessed by engineers. And following a visit to the junction, adjustments have now been made to the traffic patterns in efforts to improve the safety for road users.

A TfGM spokesman said: “Engineers conducted a site visit at the junction of Lee Lane/Winter Hey Lane/Longworth Road in Horwich on Friday, January 15.

“Following a study of traffic patterns, adjustments were made to the clearance time between Lee Lane and Winter Hey Lane, with engineers conducting a further site visit on Tuesday, January 19. The signals are currently being upgraded to MOVA system, which uses detectors and signal controllers to better manage traffic flows at busy junctions, with completion expected in February.”
