A CRACKDOWN on dog owners who do not clean up after their pets has been launched.

Bolton Council are warning pet owners they face a fine of £100 if the leave dog mess behind — and are urging residents to report irresponsible pet owners.

It comes as reports of dog fouling increase during lockdown.

The local authority says it will take action in areas where there is an issue.

With residents being urged to stay local for their daily exercise more people are getting out and about near to home.

And with dog walkers often picking the same route to exercise their pets, residents are reporting an increase in dog fouling.

And it is asking residents to report problems in particular areas so it can target enforcement.

Cllr Adele Warren, Bolton Council Executive Cabinet Member for Environmental Services Delivery said: “During the lockdown I have noticed increasing numbers of complaints from residents about this issue on social media. It’s distressing at any time to come across dog mess in the street - but it’s even worse at the moment when our daily bit of outdoor exercise is one of the few things we all look forward to.

“Most dog owners are responsible and pick up after their dog – but it’s the small minority which don’t who let the side down. So please pick up after your pooch when you’re out and about during the lockdown - and let’s keep Bolton clean and tidy for everyone to enjoy.”

You can report problems with dog fouling or litter issues by calling Bolton Council on 01204 336632. Report issues online at bolton.gov.uk/animals-pests/dog-fouling

The council’s enforcement team is asking residents to supply as much information as possible when reporting an issue.

Teams need to know the exact location of the problem and the time of day it tends to occur – as well as a description of any dog owner and their dog. If the owner is travelling to your area in a car the council is also asking people to take a note of the registration number.
