A HORSE rider has expressed her concerns over the behaviour of drivers on a stretch of road which is endangering herself and her family while they are out on their journeys.

Sharon Whittaker, who lives in Sharples, keeps two horses and a pony at Shore Lodge Farm in Dunscar, where she takes them on rides from with her daughter Ava, 10, and step-daughter Ellie, 21.

To get to better walking spots they need to cross a bend on Blackburn Road, near to Dunscar Golf Club, and this often leads to problems for the riders as cars approach them.

They are often left waiting for a chance to cross the road safely with many motorists choosing not to allow them to pass in front of their vehicles.

Sharon, 48, said: “We often get to go out on the horses at around 3pm or 4pm and are out for about an hour.

“We have to come out at a long bend to get to the nicer areas and there are some drivers that are impatient and don’t wait for us to cross.

“It can take us a while to cross the road.

“I think drivers should be more courteous.

“We wear reflective coats and people can see there is a small child riding a pony.

“The coat that Ava wears when she is out has ‘mini rider’ written on it.

“We always wave when someone lets us cross but unfortunately there is a good proportion of drivers who do not and drive past.

“Some people are driving around that bend really fast as well.

“I know that some pedestrians have had problems too.”

Sharon also acknowledges that motorists may also be taken by “surprise” by the presence of horse riders near the bend.

She believes there should be road safety measures introduced in the area such as a warning sign.

Bolton Council said it had not received any reports of the road being unsafe for pedestrians or horse riders.
