Taken in 1955 this photograph from the archives shows Gunners of the 253 Field Regt RA - the Bolton Artillery - loading an eight-ton cannon on to a lorry outside the Drill Hall's Bradshawgate entrance.
The cannon was from the Firwood Hall Hotel in Bolton, where it had been rusting for many years. Quite why there was a cannon there isn't clear. Perhaps readers could shed some light on the history of the mystery cannon
