COUNCIL bosses have recommitted to regenerating the town centre, with work well underway to transform large areas of the town.

Work has begun at numerous developments across the town centre, including plans to build 124 town houses around St George’s Road and Bark Street, and the new YMCA facility in Deansgate.

The council has also given an update on when it expects work to begin on the redevelopment of the Crompton Place Shopping Centre. Plans are being put in place by the Crompton Place developers, Bolton Regeneration Ltd, to start demolition of the shopping centre towards the end of the year.

As well as these plans already in development, the redevelopment of the Deansgate and Central Street area over the River Croal for 158 new homes is set to be decided on Thursday at the council’s planning committee meeting.

These plans have been recommended by planners and would involved transforming the area with homes, ranging in size from studio apartments to three-bedroom townhouses, as well as commercial space and a public square.

A council spokesman said: “Bolton Council and its development partners are committed to the delivery of Bolton’s £1.2bn town centre regeneration masterplan.

“Bolton Regeneration Ltd (BRL), the developers and investors behind the redevelopment of Crompton Place Shopping Centre, are putting the final plans in place with a view to starting a phased demolition programme towards the end of 2021.

“Other town centre developments are also progressing, with building well underway on the Watson Homes, Bolton at Home and Irwell Valley Chorley Street residential development.

“The development is expected to be complete in September 2021 and will create 118 new homes, for shared ownership, affordable rent and over-50s accommodation.

“Developers Forshaw have started work to build 59 town houses in Bark Street and have begun demolishing properties in St George’s Road, with a further 65 town houses to follow.

“Demolition work has also started on the new £6.1m YMCA’s facility for young people on Deansgate in Bolton, Completion of this development is scheduled for early 2022.”
