A JUNIOR football team has teamed up with Bolton Wanderer's Community Trust for a fundraiser to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Burnden Park disaster.

On March 9, it will be 75 years since the 'forgotten tragedy', where 33 people lost their lives and hundreds were injured in a crush during an FA Cup tie between Bolton and Stoke City.

To remember the anniversary, members at Astley Bridge Junior Football Club will be taking part in a sponsored walk to raise funds for the club and also the community trust.

On the week commencing March 8, each member will walk, run or cycle a total of 15 miles - around the distance from Burnden Park to Stapleton then onto the University of Bolton Stadium, and back.

This will be done in one or several short walks, runs or cycles, with the aim of each child being sponsored £1 a mile.

Staff from Bolton Wanderers Community Trust will be running the full distance on Saturday, March 13.

Profits from the fundraiser will be split 50/50 between the club and the trust.

Club secretary, Jason Worswick, said: "We hope to raise money for the trust to help them carry on the valuable community work they do, and also to fund physical and mental health sessions for our kids as we exit the pandemic."

"With the season looking like it could start again by the end of March, this challenge will allow them to focus on their fitness, and get them out in the fresh air."

Based at Stapleton, the Roughly 170 kids playing across various teams, with ages ranging from five to under 16s.

With Covid restrictions in place, members are unable to run together as a group.

As an incentive, there will be a special prize for the kids who raise the most.

The club is in talks with Bolton Wanderer's Community Trust to determine the prize - with stadium tours or getting the opportunity to wave the flags on matchday being possible contenders.
