A DRAMATIC river rescue carried out by Bolton's fourth emergency service maybe featured in the new series of BBC's prime time documentary, Ambulance.

Bolton Mountain Rescue Team were filmed for the new series when volunteers were mobilised to help North West Ambulance Service after a 67-year-old woman had fallen slipping in to the river injuring her arm.

And given the nature of the incident the team is confident the rescue, will make the 'final cut'.

Bolton Mountain Rescue Team were called at 11.25am on Tuesday after a woman had fallen in the Roddlesworth plantations in neighbouring Darwen, sustaining an upper-arm injury .

She had slipped into the River Roddlesworth and although she had managed to get out of the water and sat of the opposing bank.

Deputy leader Chris Greenhalgh said: "It was a difficult access, it was slippery and steep, so it was different sort of rescue."

A total of 19 team members assisted the two ambulance crew to treat and 'extract the casualty'. Although water levels were low, the riverbed was "incredibly slippy" and as a precaution a rope system was used to protect both the casualty and rescuers.

The woman was taken to hospital for further treatment.

Chris said: "I followed a little later to the scene and realised it was being filmed for the BBC Ambulance series.

"I'd ike viewers to realise that the Bolton Mountain Rescue Team is a volunteer service and relies on donations and fundraising."

Chris, who works for the fire service, added: "The volunteers have full time jobs and understanding employers who allow them to do this."

He said it had become busy in recent weeks particularly in the Rivington and Darwen when people familiar with the area and dressed appropriately had just had an accident.

Chris said: "I joined the Bolton Mountain Rescue Service because, I like the other members, are outdoors type people and we train regularly on this sort of terrain which the ambulance are not used to."

A date has not been set for the new series will air.
