TRIBUTES have been paid to former landlady Irene Wood (née Murray), who passed away peacefully on February 20 at the age of 94.

Irene was a beloved wife to the late Royce, and a loving mother to Howard. She is survived by her beloved brother Jack.

Born and bred in Bolton, Irene worked as a dental assistant before becoming the landlady of The Tempest Arms on Chorley Old Road, where she worked from the late 1940s to the early 1970s. She then became the landlady at The Vulcan Inn in Deane - a position she held until the early 1990s. After retiring from the pub trade, she ran a health food shop in Bolton with Royce.

Sociable, hard-working, and bright, Irene was described by her son as being conscientious and always well turned out. She will be sadly missed.

A memorial service will be arranged after lockdown.
