FOUR cars have crashed into fencing on a bend on farmland in the space of a year – with fears sheep may be left to roam in the road.

Matt Ramwell has run Quarlton Fold Farm on Bury Road, Turton, for the last couple of years, and in the last 12 months there have been several incidents where vehicles have left the road and ended up in the field.

The latest incident happened at around 10.45am on Tuesday when a silver 4x4 Freelander with straw and shavings in the back lost control.

A black pick-up truck, which was passing, towed the off-road vehicle back onto the road before it drove off.

But the Freelander owner failed to inform Mr Ramwell, 33, about the collision, leaving him to foot the cost of repairs again.

The spot is also in an area where sheep gather but fortunately they have not been hit in any of the collisions.

But Mr Ramwell is concerned they may stray into the road.

He said: “This is the fourth time it has happened in a year.

"When I went to the bend on Tuesday after it happened a cyclist went off the road as well.

“There’s been accidents there for years.

"There are reflectors on the bend to make people aware of the bend when they are driving at night but it keeps happening. People need to slow down.

“I want to catch whoever crashes into the fences so they pay for the repairs. But some, including the person involved on Tuesday, have not come forward.

“It has become a bit of a standing joke with the contractor that I have to call up every time it happens. If people have called us after an accident we pull the vehicles out with a tractor.

“There’s also animals that shelter on that side so the cars could hit them or leave a space for them to go wandering in the road and cause an accident.”

The farm has improved the look of the area in recent years, spending thousands of pounds on features such as dry stone walls.

Mr Ramwell added: “We have spent all this money to tidy the area up and make it look nice and this happens.”
