Making their own entertainment at Brigadier Pit, Snydale in Westhoughton, these youngsters were clearly enjoying the summer weather probably in the late 1930s.
The lodge was the last trace of the former Snydale Colliery which opened in 1866 and got the nickname Brigadier from the dog which won the prestigious Waterloo Cup that year.
