A PUNTER who pretended to have a booking at a Bolton venue over the weekend has been slammed by staff in a now viral Facebook post.

Hundreds of hospitality venues across Bolton welcomed revellers back last week as lockdown restriction eased across the UK.

However, The Dragonfly on Nelson's Square, Bolton, will remain shut until indoor hospitality reopens next month.

One customer, though, tried to 'blackmail' the popular food and drinks venue - by pretending to have a booking.

In an unusual exchange on Facebook Messenger on Saturday afternoon, which has since been posted online by the eaterie, the supposed customer said: "I have a booking for today at 5pm till you close, for a table for six, and I confirmed it in person with someone on the phone, and also on person on Monday but I don't have a reference number.

"Am I okay just to turn up and be seated with my group as I don't want any hassle when I arrive."

When venue bosses informed the hopeful customer that they thought there was some sort of mistake, they would not take no for an answer, replying: "Yes, the mistake is that you have not sent me my reference number in advance, can the booking go ahead with no issues when I get there?

"With it being the first Saturday you are open, I booked in advance and checked in person on Monday."

After being rejected politely but owners, the person threatened to post a negative review online about their experience.

They added: "Well, can I get your managers contact as I am going to write a bad review online about your mess up - unless I get my booking honoured."

Venue bosses joked online: "Nice try Karen. But not today!"

The Facebook post has more than 600 likes and has been shared 261 times on the social media platform - and the public seem to be on the venue's side.

One commented: "Maybe the person holding a business hostage, that's not been able to trade for the best part of a year should have been kind, instead of trying to blackmail them with fake bad reviews."

Another added: "People are just mad - they will do and try anything and just wont listen." A third joked: "That’s funny. I might have gone along with it and let her turn up with her mates."

In recent years, the term 'Karen' has become a derogatory term for a woman seeming to be entitled or demanding beyond the scope of what is normal.

According to Wikipedia, the term also refers to 'memes' depicting women who use their privilege to demand their own way.

The Dragonfly has been contacted for further comment.
