CALLS have been made to make a road safer after a crash on a notorious road.

A car crashed into a barrier at the weekend, in an area described as being blighted by anti-social behaviour.

The smash happened on the of Harrowby Street and Sutherland Street, directly opposite a petrol station, with numerous car parts and debris left scattered around the area.

Resident Paula Wallen said that people had been walking past the spot just moments before the crash, which occurred shortly before 10pm on Saturday, April 17.

Paula said: “ He totally wrote off his car and there was oil and car parts all across the road.

“I went out to see what was going on and the driver was out of the car and he was a bit shocked.”

One of the headlights could be seen dangling out while car parts are left on the road.

Paula added: “This isn’t the first time this has happened along this stretch of road - it is notorious. Does somebody have to be seriously injured or worse before traffic-calming measures are put in place?”

Although the circumstances of this crash are not known, residents said they have had problems with speeding in the area, and other anti-social behaviours.

Cllr Paul Sanders has previously pledged to help with anti-social behaviour in the area, saying that Farnworth ward councillors “will liaise with all partners and request this area be part of the ‘Safe4Summer’ campaign which takes place over the summer months.”

Fellow councillor Maureen Flitcroft added that speeding around that area of Farnworth had become a growing issue over lockdown and she was currently unsure on what the answer was.

She said: “It seems that in this particular case, a resident has crashed into a barrier, but has gone back to try and sort it out.

“But that area is really bad for speeding and we have got quite a few places where it is a problem.

"I know police have some operations but that only has so much effect.

"It is a common communication we get from residents and it has increased over the pandemic.

“As well as being illegal, people rev their engines and it is a nuisance.”

Cllr Flitcroft said she would support police in speed awareness initiatives, while exploring other avenues.
