THE fire service have issued a safety warning after a fire started due to a chip pan being left unattended in a mid-terrace property.

Firefighters were called to Hurst Street, Leigh, at around 6.45am on Friday morning to reports of a fire.

The occupier of the house had tried to put out the blaze themselves and as a result sustained minor injuries; they were taken to hospital.

Crews used breathing apparatus and hose reels to tackle the fire, and ventilators.

There was significant smoke damage to the ground floor of the property.

Watch manager Grundy said: "We were called to a house fire this morning on Hurst Street.

"The fire was due to a chip pan, the occupier had sustain injuries trying to extinguish the fire himself.

"There was extensive smoke damage to the ground floor of the property.

"We used breathing apparatus and house reels to put out the fire, as well as ventilators.

"We try to discourage people from using chip pans and if they do use them, never leave them unattended."
