BOLTON'S NHS heroes are gearing up for the Captain Tom 100 Challenge.
Yesterday would have been Captain Sir Tom's 101st birthday and marked the one-year anniversary of the extraordinary celebrations that followed the conclusion of his fundraising walk, which raised an incredible £38.9 million for the NHS.
Staff at Bolton NHS Foundation Trust, which governs the Royal Bolton Hospital, will this weekend taking part in 100-themed challenges in memory of Captain Sir Tom Moore to raise money for Bolton NHS Charitable Fund.
And they are hoping the people of Bolton will be inspired to get involved too.
Sharon Martin, Director of Strategy and Transformation — who is baking a 100 cakes for colleagues - said: “This is a great opportunity to honour Captain Sir Tom and his remarkable efforts, and give something back into the NHS ourselves at this important time.
“I’ve already shared some of my cakes and they’ve gone down well!
“I hope that the people of Bolton get behind us and we can all have some — socially distanced — fun for a good cause this bank holiday weekend.”
Challenges staff and their families will be undertaking to raise money include:
- Three- year-old Thomas Amos, son of occupational therapist Helena, will be riding his new bike without his stabilisers for 100 minutes
-The Skinner family, led by charity manager Sarah are writing 100 positivity postcards and hand-delivering them to households around Horwich and Blackrod to continue spreading Captain Tom's message of hope that 'tomorrow will be a good day';
- Esther Steel, Director of Corporate Governance and dog Marvin's will be walking 100 metres, 100 times with lots of stops to take 100 photos;
-James Mawrey, Director of People will be training hard for a 100-mile cycle ride planned for July and
-Bolton Family Care Division will be taking part in the ‘Ultimate’ Captain Tom 100 Challenge, completing an 'active 100' every day for a month.
Local residents can get involved too by fundraising themselves, or supporting the teams by donating to the charity.
A spokesman for the trust said: "We hope you’ll join the thousands of people around the world taking part in Captain Tom 100 and spread his message of hope while raising much-needed funds for Bolton NHS Charitable Fund.
