It looks like total chaos on the road but for motorists at the time this was all part of a drive through Walkden.
Taken in 1964, this picture shows the Walkden monument situated in the middle of the roundabout on Manchester Road.
The impressive structure was erected in memory of the Countess of Ellesmere, Lady Harriet Egerton.
It was moved to its current home next to St Paul’s Church in 1968 when the roundabout was removed
