Hundreds of fans including some with flares gathered outside the University of Bolton stadium with Bolton hoping to clinch automatic promotion.
But their hopes were dashed as Bolton Wanderers failed hold on to their first half lead and then conceded an injury time goal to play-off chasing Exeter City.
Wanderers were hoping Walsall could hold Morecambe but the latter ran out 2-0 winners putting them only a point behind Bolton in League 2.
The afternoon started positively and a crowd of a few hundred soon swelled to well of over thousand as Bolton took the lead against Exeter. The equaliser did not dampen spirits and fans rallied round their team as the game wore on hoping Bolton could nick a late winner.
But it was not to be and it now means Bolton’s result in the final game must be better that of Morecambe’s. Bolton play Crawley away whilst Morecambe are at home to Bradford.

The final whistle saw much of the crowd dissipate with large numbers heading off to the leisure park.
Some fans managed to get into the ground and stewards and police soon surrounded the entrances.
Later, a scuffle between two teenagers was quickly broken up by police who then moved any remaining groups still stood near the reception on.
A spokesman for Wanderers said: "We are aware of an incident that took place after today's game and are currently investigating the matter with Greater Manchester Police."
