A Volkswagen Polo collided with a Mercedes as it was approaching Junction 4 on the M61 shortly after 1pm.

Four people were involved and fire, ambulance and police were all in attendance at the scene.

There have been no injuries or fatalities - but police are currently taking statements from drivers to find out more information about the incident.

A Highways England spokesperson said: "We had two cars collide on the southbound near J.4 just after 1pm.

"Both cars ended up in the bushes alongside the hard shoulder.  Four people involved and one taken to hospital in an ambulance.

"Another was picked up by a family member and two others went off with the driver who recovered their vehicle.

"Fire, ambulance and police all attended but I don’t know if anyone was trapped.  Lane one was closed for attendance and recovery but it was all done and dusted by 3.20pm."

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police traffic said: "Let's have a game of spot the car. The VW Polo was approaching J4 on the M61 when it collided with the Mercedes sending both cars into the trees.

"Amazingly no injuries and #XT11 is speaking with the drivers now @NWmwaypolice."
