A woman determined to make a difference to the environment for future generations has created a completely eco-friendly children's magazine.

Tired of seeing single-use plastic that so commonly accompanies children's magazines, Clare Carney from Blackburn decided to create a new title, made from completely recyclable materials, called Twigs.

The mum-of-one worked with her five-year-old son Huxley to create the educational magazine, and recruited the help of volunteer illustrators and designers to produce the final hard copies.

Ms Carney, who has no experience of anything to do with the magazine industry said: "I have been working on this idea for a couple of years and it has now come to its fruition due mainly to the dedication and outstanding services of Sally the illustrator and Mike the graphic designer.

"The idea for Twigs first occurred after I’d had my son Huxley (who is featured in the first issue).

"My view of the world and also my knowledge of alternative ways of living, as opposed to the status quo, was changing and expanding.

"I‘m frustrated that I had been unconsciously in denial about the environment and also angry that it had taken me until my forties to begin to see the world differently.

"Twigs has brought me a chance to do something, to help others via the younger generation and be an activist in my own way.

"If one person, no matter how small, can make a difference then imagine if all these individuals join up – what a force for nature we will be."

Twigs is believed to be the first children’s magazine of its kind to be environmentally friendly, plastic free and compostable while also encouraging positive mental health and enabling solution focussed thinking.

Aimed at children aged four and above Twigs is accessible for all as it includes British signs, dyslexie fonts and organic colours to reduce over stimulation.

The magazine will be published four times a year from 2022 but Ms Carney is also encouraging people to download the issues as a PDF.

She added: "Twigs will help children reconnect with nature, and through compassion and love, help them create a sustainable and positive future."
