THE return of Ironman to Bolton will help lift the town out of the lockdown doldrums, says a town hall boss and triathletes.

The 112-mile challenge, taking in Queen's Park, Pennington Flash and the West Pennines, will kick off on July 4 and is already a sell-out.

For town hall chiefs the gathering, also featuring Iron Kids and a 10km race, will be an ideal post-Covid showcase for the borough.

And elite athletes are looking forward to a weekend where Bolton welcomes the cream of the Ironman competition to the north-west.

Cllr Martyn Cox, regeneration cabinet member, said: "The Bolton Ironman is our premier event and is enormously popular.

“I think everyone is desperate to getting back to normality and for people in Bolton that is the return of the Ironman.

“People like to support it and line the streets when it’s on.

“It is the full English breakfast of events, you have the lot with this one.

“It is also important for charities who rely on this big event with the fundraising that comes from it.”

Ian Mostyn, a seasoned triathlete from Ramsbottom and head coach at Rochdale Triathlon Club, is among those who can't wait for the event's return.

He told The Bolton News: "What makes Ironman UK in Bolton the best triathlon in the world are the spectators - the people of Bolton."

And he's adamant the physical challenge offered by the swim, cycle and run are unsurpassed.

He added: "What makes Ironman UK one of the toughest challenges in the world is the hills. The first few miles lull you into a false sense of security until I hit the first big hill, which was Sheep House Lane in Rivington.

“This hill has almost mythical status amongst triathletes in the UK and for great reason – it is a tough climb."

Ian recalls getting goosebumps as he reached Adlington and Babylon Lane to see a mass of people and cowbells, alongside complete strangers shouting, encouraging him up the hill, with so much noise and enthusiasm.

Promoters are pulling out all the stops to ensure enhanced hygiene regimes, a reduced density and minimal touchpoints, make the event Covid-secure.

People can still search online for volunteers opportunities at the event.
