WOMEN and children at Bolton’s Fortalice refuge have been benefitting from the generosity of local people.

Donations have paid for 'welcome packs' of vital toiletries for when women first come to the refuge, fleeing domestic abuse.

Gayle McBain, a manager with Body Shop at Home, decided to try to help by creating the packs.

“I knew many women come with almost no possessions to the refuge, often in a very emotional state and with traumatised children with them,” said Gayle.

“Fortalice has to provide everything for them when they arrive and toiletries are definitely something that they will always need. So I thought that this was something I could help with.”

She has put together 24 bags containing £30 worth each of essentials like shampoo, shower gel, soap and deodorant. Gayle is donating any commission she would get to fund more packs.

She is happy to receive donations to buy more “as the refuge is always really busy and women and children are coming to stay there all the time.”

Gill Smallwood, Fortalice chief executive, added: “The packs were a lovely surprise and really welcomed. They provide a little luxury for our residents which they certainly would not be able to provide for themselves when they first come into the refuge. I’d like to thank all the people who have already helped with the packs – you’ve made a real difference.”
