THE assault trial of Leigh Centurions star Anthony Gelling has been delayed.

Gelling, who usually plays at centre, was due to stand trial at Liverpool Crown Court today, Wednesday, accused of inflicting grievous bodily harm on partner Toni Mackey.

But proceedings were adjourned for the day due to the illness of the prosecuting barrister.

It is anticipated that the case will instead be opened today, Thursday.

Warrington Wolves head coach Steve Price and assistant Lee Briers were present in the public gallery during a short hearing this morning, in which Gelling spoke only to confirm his name.

The 30-year-old, who played for Warrignton at the time, allegedly assaulted Ms Mackey during an incident at the couple’s home on Cronton Lane Mew in Widnes on February 6 last year.

She attended Whiston Hospital the following day having suffered what were said to be ‘serious’ injuries, including a fractured eye socket.

Gelling turned out for the Wolves during the 2020 season before ending up at the Leigh Sports Village.

The New Zealand-born Cook Islands international has also represented Widnes Vikings, Wigan Warriors and New Zealand Warriors during his rugby league career.
