THIS was the view up Crown Street in Bolton in the early 1960s.
The large cleared site on the right of the photo would eventually become the site of a multi-storey car park.
Clearly there was a need as motorists appear to have taken up every bit of available space in the foreground on the off-street car park on waste ground and also parking all the way up Crown Street itself.
To the left you can make out part of the sign painted on the end of the building for Henry Whitehurst, corn merchants, which closed in 1982. That building would be demolished a year later in 1983.
