BOLTON comedian Dave Wolfe revealed he had distinct advantage when he took on fellow funnyman Jim Bowen in a new Channel 4 TV series, A Frame with Davis, in 1984.

In the show two well-known personalities played a frame of snooker while talking to World Snooker Champion Steve Davis.

Dave revealed that he regularly played against Bolton’s Tony Knowles before he turned professional and that he turned out each week for Eagley Sports and Social Club.

“Tony and I come from the same area and I was a member of the club where his father was steward and where we learned to play,” said Dave. “We used to play for a pound a frame and he would give me 60 start and still win.

“I did beat him once from an even start but that was a long time ago and he was playing trick shots rather than concentrating on the game.”

Bullseye host Jim Bowen joked: “After two hours with him and Steve Davis I am going back to draughts.

“My snooker was bad in the first place and has gone steadily downwards. In fact I am now nearly as bad at snooker as I am at darts and I am nearly as bad a darts player as I am a game show host!”

But Jim clearly enjoyed his experience, even though he did get trounced by Dave.

“It must be boring for Steve to have wallies like me trying to play but he handled things really well.

“In fact he hosted the programme like a seasoned professional - for a lad of 26, he is far too talented for my liking.”

A Frame with Davis ran from 1983 to 1986 and featured a host of celebrities from sport and showbiz including England footballer Emlyn Hughes, comedy legend Norman Wisdom and Minder star Denis Waterman.
