- Former Bolton mayoress Gay Wharton died after being hit by an Audi S3 car on Chorley New Road, Bolton on November 13 last year.
- Wasim Iqbal, aged 23, of Chorley New Road, Bolton, is accused of causing 58-year-old Mrs Wharton’s death by dangerous driving.
- He denies the offences and is on trial at Manchester Minshull Street Crown Court. Judge John Potter is presiding with Colin Buckle prosecuting and Oliver Jarvis defending Iqbal.
- A second man, Assad Hussain, aged 23, of Maplewood Gardens, Bolton, has already pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous driving. He will be sentenced at the conclusion of Iqbal’s trial.
