AN investigation has been launched after a woman was allegedly 'sexually assaulted' in Bromley Cross this morning.

Police officers were called to a scene on Chapeltown Road, outside the Railway pub, at 7.30am on June 16 following reports of a sexual assault.

A forensic examination team could be seen in the beer garden of the premises from around 8am this morning - and remained stationed there throughout the early afternoon, according to eyewitnesses.

There was a heavy police presence at the scene.

The venue was closed until around 3pm today while forensic teams carried out its work, which included searching for fingerprints, it is understood.

The incident is not believed to have anything to do with the premises, according to venue bosses.

The female victim is currently receiving specialist support.

A Greater Manchester Police spokesperson said: "Officers received a report at around 7.30am on Wednesday June 16 of a sexual assault that is believed to have occurred near Chapeltown Road, Bromley Cross, Bolton.

"Enquiries are in their initial stages and the victim is currently receiving specialist support.

"There is not believed to be a wider risk to the public."
