AN orchard has started to take root in Longsight Park.

Friends of the park were out on Saturday planting around 16 trees, as part of the City of Trees initiative, supported by Bolton Council.

Jane Wilcock from the group said: "We planted apple, pear, cherry and plum trees.

"In a few years people can come down with a punnet and pick the fruit.

"There have been a number of trees planted across Bolton as part of the initiative."

Friends of the park worked to transform the park.

Thousands of new trees are set to be planted across Bolton as part of the council’s commitment to make the borough a cleaner and greener place to live.

Bolton Council has identified 7.3 hectares of land across the borough as potential planting sites for a new initiative in partnership with City of Trees.

Working across Greater Manchester, City of Trees is a charity aiming to restore unused woodland and eventually plant a tree for every person that lives in the city region.

Using a grant from the Government’s £12.1m Nature for Climate fund, teams will be planting trees across Bolton and other areas early next year.

It forms part of a nationwide project to create 500 hectares of new woodland by 2021.
