Two friends from Atherton will be driving to every Premier League stadium in the country in order to help fight breast cancer.

Martin Yates and Luke Fearnley will travelling around 2,200 miles in total this weekend in aid of ‘Breast Cancer Now’, a charity formed in 2015, aiming to prevent any Breast Cancer related deaths from 2050.

In January 2020, Martin’s younger sister Charlene, 32, was diagnosed with breast cancer.

Luckily, she overcame the disease with the help of surgery and radiotherapy and reached her ‘One-Year’ cancer-free milestone in February.

Martin and Luke have said they wish to commend the staff at the Christie NHS Foundation Trust (Salford), Thomas Linacre Centre in Wigan, and the Wrighton, Wigan and Leigh NHS Foundation Trusts, which helped Charlene in her recovery, During their journey, the pair will both wear pink, a colour now synonymous with breast cancer awareness.

Having come up with a basic road map for their fundraiser, the two friends had to wait for confirmation on which teams would be in the 2021/2022 Premier League before they could finalise their plan.

Nineteen of the 20 clubs were finalised in early May when Manchester City lifted the top flight title, including two of those to be promoted from the Championship - Norwich City and Watford.

In the end, it came down to a play-off final between Welsh club Swansea City and London-based Brentford at the end of May to determine the last place. Ultimately, no diversions were needed as the final went the way of Brentford.

Throughout their trip, which starts on Friday, updates will be shared by Atherton Collieries, as Luke works as an under-sevens coach with the club. The Black and Whites have already made their own donation, covering fuel costs.

While the finer details are still being how worked out regarding how the duo will receive monetary donations, those wishing to donate can do so via the club.
