A BMW became airborne after clipping a kerb in Accrington.

Blackburn magistrates heard the car hit two vehicles that were waiting at the lights near the junction of Dunkenhalgh Way and Dill Hall Lane.

The driver, who was banned at the time, ran off.

When the owner of one of the damaged cars caught up with Luke McCormick he bit him on the hand, drawing blood.

McCormick, 36, of Beechtree Road, Liverpool, pleaded guilty to driving while disqualified, failing to provide a specimen for analysis and assaulting Rick Cheshire. He was sentenced to 18 weeks in prison suspended for two years.

He was banned from driving for five years and ordered to pay £300 costs and £128 victim surcharge.

Andy Robinson, prosecuting, said the BMW Sport driven by McCormick was seen weaving in and out of traffic at speed. At the junction with Dill Hall Lane it hit a kerb and went through the air before hitting two stationary vehicles.

“The defendant ran from the scene but was chased and detained by the drivers of the other vehicles,” said Mr Robinson. “He then bit Mr Cheshire, causing a puncture wound to his hand.”

McCormick was taken to hospital where he refused to go through the blood procedure.

Rebecca Templeton, defending, said her client was aware the matters were serious but was asking for one last opportunity.

She said McCormick had suffered a lot of trauma in recent years, including the death of his father.

“He has dealt with that by turning to drink and other substances to mask his grief,” said Miss Templeton.

“It has now been 12 months since he committed an offence and he has realised he has got to take control of his life.”
