A FIRE broke out at a barn in Westhoughton this morning.

Five fire engines from Horwich, Atherton, Farnworth and Hindley and several specialist appliances were sent to a farm site on Chorley Road at around 8.30am to tackle a blaze at a barn.

Hay bails caught fire inside the property before crews extinguished the flames and teamed up with the farmer at the site to make the area safe.

A fire service spokesman said: "While we were in attendance crews worked with the farmer to remove flammable material from the path of the fire.

"The fire is now out and firefighters are preparing to leave the scene."

No-one has reportedly been hurt in the incident and the extent of the damage caused at the site has not been recorded.
