BOLTON is set to be hotter than the Canaries this week, prompting health bosses to issue a 'heat-health alert'.

Temperatures will reach a sizzling 28 degrees by Thursday and while the town basks in glorious sunshine, residents are being urged to keep cool and an eye out for others.

Continuing high temperatures have prompted a national health warning with Public Health England issuing a “heat-health alert”, warning that older people, children and those with underlying health conditions are at most risk.

Bolton Council’s Executive Cabinet Member for Wellbeing, Cllr Sue Baines, said: “High temperatures can pose a real risk to health, especially for older residents and anyone with a long-term heath problem.

“Sadly these groups are also at most risk from Covid-19 and may be choosing to spend more time at home even as restrictions are eased and we begin to open up.

“I encourage everyone to read the advice on staying cool and to keep an eye on friends, relatives and neighbours who may need some help to stay safe this summer.”

The heatwave comes as many of these residents are spending more time indoors, either self-isolating or observing additional Covid-19 precautions due to their higher risk.

And the government has published advice and guidance on staying safe, alongside tips on how to beat the heat and keep our homes cool.

These include:

• Keep out of the sun between 11am and 3pm

Drink plenty of water and avoid excess alcohol, caffeine or hot drinks

• Avoid extreme physical exertion

• Close curtains on windows that face the sun in the morning or afternoon

• Turn off non-essential lights and electrical equipment

• Move to a cooler room for sleeping

Anyone heading to parks or public spaces to cool off is asked to be considerate of others and follow sensible Covid-19 precautions such as social distancing and hand hygiene.

Bolton residents also urged to keep an eye on vulnerable neighbours who may be at additional risk.
