A group of Blackrod and Rivington school children have been awarded by police for stepping in to save a duck from attack from another teenager.

The year 11 students from Rivington and Blackrod High School were visiting High Rid Reservoir in June when they saw another teenager throwing stones at a duck.

The duck had been struck in the eye by a stone and was struggling to stay afloat due to its injuries.

The quick thinking students rescued the duck and grabbed the assistance of youth workers who were in the area to get the duck some veterinary attention.

The duck was able to recover from its injuries.

They all received a Chief Superintendents Commendation at a short ceremony.

A GMP Bolton West spokesman, said: "A group of good citizens from Rivington and Blackrod High School attended a short ceremony with Inspector David Johnston, Neighbourhood Inspector for Bolton West to commend them for their act of kindness and doing the right thing.

"The group pictured along with one of their friends who could not make the ceremony received a Chief Superintendents Commendation for their act of kindness."

Insp David Johnston, added: "Young people often get bad press when the majority are good citizens. It was really nice to be able to recognise this particular group who represent the next generation of people who will do the right thing.

"They have all finished year 11 and are looking forward to their school prom. I am sure that they all have a bright future ahead of them and I wish them the very best."
