TRAFFIC is at a standstill on the motorway following a road traffic collision earlier this afternoon.

Emergency services were called to the scene on the M66 towards Bury, just after Simister Island, following reports of a collision shortly after 2pm on July 26.

Lane three was closed due to barrier damage, and emergency repairs are currently underway, resulting in delays on the M60 and the M66.

All traffic was stopped temporarily at around 3.15pm, according to Transport for Greater Manchester - but is now starting to "ease slightly".

A spokesperson said: "One lane closed and queueing traffic due to emergency barrier repairs and earlier accident on M66 Northbound between J4 M60 M62 (Simister Island) and J3 Pilsworth Road (Hollins). Lane three is closed."

A North West Ambulance Service spokesperson said that no casualties have been taken to hospital.

Greater Manchester Police has been contacted for more information.
