A "MINI Olympics" is due to take place in Blackburn later this Summer with a range of free activities for families.

The Community Get Together, as organisers have dubbed it, will take place on August 21, weather permitting, and will be held at Hereford Road playing field in Whitebirk.

Outdoor games will include five aside football, with matches to be played by Whitebirk teams against sides from Shadsworth, Romney Walk and Little Harwood along with bike races, an egg and spoon race and three legged races.

Organiser Jacqueline McGrew BEM said: "We want families and communities to get together and we want parents to bring their children.

"It's all outdoor with games for children, we'll be doing all the old games."

As well as the five-a-side football and races, children will have the opportunity to play old favourites such as roll a penny, roll a ball and hook a duck.

The event, which Mrs McGrew has described as a "mini Olympics", is being organised by the Whitebirk Residents Association in conjunction with Romney Voices and South East Blackburn's Community Food Club (SEB's).

The groups are all experienced in organising community events in previous years.

An outdoor event like this is intended as a welcome break to residents in the town following long periods of lockdown during the pandemic crisis over the last year and a half.

Mrs McGrew said: "It's free but we need people to register.

"If the weather's good we'll have it on the 21st but if its not we'll wait until we have good weather."

Teams and individuals are welcome to take part.

Anyone wanting to register can go to the Whitebirk 2000 Centre on 34 Breacon Road, Blackburn.

Mrs McGrew says that she will be there from 10am to 1pm, seven days a week to meet people interested in taking part.
