PEOPLE gathered at Dunscar War Memorial this afternoon to pay an emotional tribute to Bolton Council leader David Greenhalgh.

Cllr Greenhalgh died on Thursday afternoon, leaving the borough shocked and saddened.

Tributes have since came flooding in for the 53-year-old, who was a champion for Bolton - especially is home ward of Bromley Cross and Egerton.

At 12 noon today (July 31), residents from Bromley Cross, Egerton and further afield gathered at the war memorial in Dunscar - a place which Cllr Greenhalgh had a real affinity for, according to his colleagues.

Flowers and wreaths have been laid as residents joined together to celebrate the life of a man who gave so much to the town through more than a decade of public service.

Fellow Bromley Cross councillors Samantha Connor and Nadim Muslim have paid an emotional tribute to their "special friend and much-loved colleague."

Cllr Connor said: "It was quite impromptu. The local community said they wanted to do something. The war memorial was a place that David had a real affinity for.

"It just seemed a natural meeting place for residents to go and lay flowers. He made such huge contributions to this community. "As well as being a colleague, he was a very good friend a huge part of mine and Cllr Muslim's lives."

Around 50 people gathered at the memorial at 12 noon, with more people arriving throughout the afternoon, according to Cllr Connor. Cllr Nadim Muslim added: "It was quite touching to see so many people attend the event, and it was organised through social media by members of the community.

"It was moving to see that the community wanted to plan this. It was a lovely idea and it meant a lot to me personally.

"He always championed this area - he was always finding ways to give back to the community, no matter what time of year it was.

"He cared so passionately about this area."
