Masked offenders held a weapon to a 10-year-old boy's throat during an armed robbery at a house in Gorton.
Three men wearing black balaclavas entered a house on Hawthorn Street armed with sharp instruments at about 7pm on Saturday.
The offenders demanded to know where the occupants, a 31-year-old woman and her 10-year-old son, kept their belongings and held the weapon to the young boy's throat. The mother was also threatened with the weapon.
The offenders then ransacked the house and fled with only a small quantity of cash.
The family were not injured during the robbery but were left extremely shook up.
Detective Constable Dave Ogden, of Longsight CID, said: "Whoever these masked men were, and whatever their motive, holding a dangerous weapon to a young boy's throat is a terrible and wicked act.
"It is behaviour befitting a coward and a bully and this gang must be brought to justice.
"The family were obviously very frightened and scared and I would appeal to anyone with information to contact officers as soon as possible."
Anyone with information is asked to call Longsight CID on 0161 856 4250 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
