WHEN this photograph was taken in 1959, this store represented the changing face of retailing in Bolton.
The Spar on Chorley Old Road was one of a new breed of outlets which would gradually take over from the traditional corner shop and act as a precursor to the much larger supermarkets we know today.
Whereas you could usually find most things in the corner shop, Spars’ approach in terms of marketing was much more aggressive. Just look at the window display with tins piled high and signs galore promoting special offers to tempt in the customers.
The prices are fascinating - butter for 3s (15p), red salmon 3s 6d (17½p) and a tin of Nescafe for 2s 11d (14p).
