AN ACTOR turned film director who grew up in and around Bolton will have his latest film shown at the Marbella International Film Festival.

One Day At A Time, directed by Vortre Williams, known as Trey, has already been recognised at several film festivals, including the Brittany International Film Festival and the Rome Prisma Independent Film Awards.

The film was shot in around Greater Manchester, with some scenes filmed in Little Lever and features relatively-unknown local actors.

It focuses on the topic of alcoholism and how it can impact people's lives.

Trey began acting in 1996 and has had small roles in soaps in Emmerdale and Coronation alongside working in construction.

In 2010 he was cast in Ken Loach's film Route Irish in 2010, and it was Loach's directing style which inspired him to turn his hand to film making.

The 50-year-old said: "When I was in that film and watching Ken Loach direct, I thought to myself, I can do that.

"The thing is with directing, you just need to learn the language, if you put your mind to it you can do it.

"I'm so excited that the film is being shown at the Marbella Film Festival, it's incredible as I made this film without a budget which is not an easy thing to do.

"I wanted to create a film using local actors, people who haven't had their 'big break' yet to help them get their name out there.

"It was shot locally, we did some scenes in Little Lever.

"The film centres on recovery from alcoholism - something which I think is a massive issue during Covid.

"I want to make films which have a social meaning to them and have a value in society.

"I wanted to explore the topic of alcoholism as I know people who've struggled with it in the past."

Trey has channelled his own experiences into filmmaking, having overcome a challenging childhood which saw him being expelled from school.

He wants to show others that you can turn your life around.

He added: "The real message is that we are all products of our thinking, and if we can change ourselves."
