Police have released a video of an arrest made in Farnworth where an officer suffered a blistered eye after petrol was splashed on him.

This is part of '999 Day', giving people the chance to show their support for the emergency services.

The video released by police showed when they visited Christian Smith’s flat to arrest him following complaints about his behaviour from his former partner and children’s school.

But when they arrived at his first floor flat at 11.20pm on December 11 last year 52-year-old Smith grabbed a petrol can and poured some of the contents out of the window.

Petrol splashed on one of the officers, causing them to suffer a blistered eye, and also set the property on fire.

Police are seen arguing with Smith in the video, before eventually detaining him.

Smith was jailed for three years and five months.

A GMP spokesman said: "Today's 999 Day and as part of our celebration of the dedicated work our officers do on a day-to-day basis we'll be sharing some stories from the front line.

"Here's an incident that occurred in Bolton last December when we attended an address in the Farnworth area to carry out an arrest, before the target threw petrol at officers and set the property alight.

"With help from Manchester Fire, the man was detained and last week was jailed for breaching a restraining order, criminal damage, obstructing a police officer, reckless arson, affray and actual bodily harm of a police officer and harassment."
