Summer signing Will Aimson is raring to go after a difficult start to his Wanderers career due to injury.

The 27-year-old defender joined Wanderers on a free transfer this summer after leaving Plymouth Argyle at the end of his contract.

However, he is yet to make a competitive first-team appearance after suffering a groin injury in pre-season.

And Aimson admits his recent injury struggles have been far from ideal.

“It’s been a frustrating start to the season for me,” said the defender. “It’s never good for a player to miss part of pre-season for the physical aspect.

“And obviously coming to a new club, you want to learn the way we play and the ins and outs, so it’s been difficult.

“But it’s nice to be back out there, and minutes last week and again this week. So hopefully I’m not too far away.”

Aimson played 90 minutes as Wanderers’ reserve side drew 3-3 against Accrington Stanley in their Central League Cup opener.

The defender was pleased to get minutes in a competitive fixture under his belt as he continues his return to full fitness.

“It has that kind of competition aspect of it,” he added. “You’ve obviously got bounce games and friendly games, but having something on the fixture definitely helps.

“We’re all playing for different reasons - you’ve got younger lads who you’re trying to integrate with the older lads.

“And you’ve got older lads that are trying to get minutes like myself, coming back from injury and trying to get that fitness.

“So we’re all there for different reasons, but all for the same cause.”

Aimson was on the bench as Ian Evatt’s men recorded a thrilling 5-2 win against Ipswich Town at Portman Road over the weekend.

The former Plymouth man was delighted with the performance and insists it will have a big impact on the squad.

“You only have to look at the other day against Ipswich and how we controlled the game, and how dangerous we looked going forward,” said Aimson.

“I thought we could have scored even more. If someone said you’re going to score five away at Ipswich, you might not believe them.

“It’s a tough place to go, it’s a good atmosphere. It’s performances like that that really give you confidence.

“And you only have to look at the depth of the squad as well, and who’s around. It’s fantastic.”

Aimson is keen to prove himself and earn an opportunity in the first team, but the defender faces tough competition from the likes of Ricardo Santos, George Johnston and Alex Baptiste.

“Anyone will say that having competition for places is a good thing,” he added. “It keeps everyone on their toes, it gets the best out of everyone.

“It’s a long season, it’s a busy season and we’ll all be needed at different times. We all get on like a house on fire and we are all helping to get the best out of each other.

“You can tell (the players) are taking everything from last season into this season and more. The club is on the up, we’re definitely going the right way and it’s an exciting project that’s going on here.

“It’s great to be a part of it.”
