IN one of the more unusual collaborations, pop icon Rick Astley and Stockport stadium fillers Blossoms are teaming up to celebrate the music of The Smiths.

Blossoms will effectively become Rick’s backing band for two special shows next month including a date at Manchester’s Albert Hall on Friday, October 8.

The Songs of the Smiths shows were revealed following Astley’s guest appearance at Blossoms show in London this week.

The singer behind hits such as Never Gonna Give you Up has always said he would love to do a show entirely of Smiths songs. Blossoms, have frequently covered Smiths songs during their live sets.

Blossoms frontman, Tom Ogden said: “The Smiths have always meant so much to Blossoms, with even their rainiest songs complete with wry humour and soul-reaching musicianship and melody. Their poppier moments are pure, joyful, danceable poetry.

"Imagine backing Rick Astley to play the songs of The Smiths? We’ve had wilder dreams, but not many. We’ll barely be able to believe it until it happens, but the dates are set, we’re studying every note, line and beat to say ‘thank you’ to The Smiths alongside Rick and do both of them proud.”
