AN APPEAL is underway after a man was seriously injured when his car careered of a carriageway this morning.

The incident occurred on Blackburn Road on the approach to Stones Bank Road in Egerton at around 1.15am on Wednesday September 15.

The driver, a man in his 20s from Brierfield, suffered serious injuries to his head, chest and hip, while his car was left completely gutted and burned out on the road for some time afterwards.

Lancashire Police East Tactical Operations' Sergeant Craig Salmon said: "This incident has resulted in a man suffering some quite serious injuries and my thoughts are with him and his family at this time.

"We are now working to establish a fuller picture of what occurred. I would ask any witnesses or anybody with CCTV or dashcam footage which could assist our investigation to get in contact with police as soon as possible."

Blackburn Road had been closed for six hours after the incident while emergency services were at the scene.

A fire service spokesman confirmed that two engines from Darwen attended and remained at the scene for around an hour and a half.

Offices eventually anounced that they had reopened the road just after 9am.

The injured man is currently in hospital, although his condition is not described as life-threatening.
