On Sunday Darwen was invaded by brass bands and what a wonderful afternoon they provided in the ideal setting of Darwen Market Arena.

Each band was accompanied by supporters who were happy to spend time and money in our little town.

It was serious business for the bands as each one was competing to prove that they were worthy of championship status.

Their performances were the result of many hours spent, not watching TV but practicing alone or in the company of others; just like the wonderful Olympic athletes we witnessed recently.

Well done to each and every one. My personal heartfelt thanks for the most enjoyable Sunday afternoon I’ve had for a long time.

Many thanks to Blackburn with Darwen Silver Band for their hospitality and also thanks to the commentator who provided the audience with many historical anecdotes about “Bonny Darren”!

I would dearly like to know which band the secret judges selected as the winner as I’m afraid I had to leave after band 14 had performed.
