FOLLOWING Kian le Fondre’s move to Burnley, here are eight youngsters who left Wanderers and where they are now.

Aaron Ramsdale

Aaron Ramsdale was let go by Wanderers at the age of 15 because, in his words, he was “too small and couldn’t kick.”

After leaving the Whites, the Stoke-born goalkeeper came through the ranks at Sheffield United before heading to the south coast with Bournemouth.

Following loan spells with Chesterfield and Wimbledon, Ramsdale broke into the Cherries’ first team and made 37 top-flight appearances before returning to the Blades in an £18.5 million move.

His consistent performances in the Premier League earned him a place in Gareth Southgate’s Euro 2020 squad following an injury to Dean Henderson.

Over the summer, the goalkeeper joined Arsenal for a fee which could rise to £30 million to battle it out with Bernd Leno for the number one shirt at the Emirates.

Nat Phillips

Nat Phillips was released by Wanderers back in 2016 amid the club’s financial issues and was set to head to the United States on a footballing scholarship at the University of North Carolina.

However, he was offered a trial at Liverpool and went on to sign a professional deal with the Premier League outfit.

Phillips became an important member of the first-team squad at Anfield last term and signed a new long-term deal over the summer.

His father, Jimmy Phillips, made over 300 appearances for Wanderers during two spells with the club.

He also served as caretaker manager on several occasions and stepped down from his role as academy director last summer.

Aaron Mooy

Aaron Mooy joined Wanderers’ youth ranks in 2006 and was even compared to Zinedine Zidane by then youth coach Peter Farrell.

The Bolton News:

However, two years later the Sydney-born midfielder left to join Scottish outfit St Mirren before returning to Australia.

Mooy impressed for Melbourne City – Manchester City’s sister club – and earned a move to the Etihad in 2016.

He was immediately loaned out to Huddersfield and was part of the side that won promotion to the Premier League, eventually making the move permanent.

Mooy also had a spell with Brighton and now plays for Chinese side Shanghai Port.

Jamie Thomas

Jamie Thomas came through the ranks at Blackpool before joining Wanderers on a two-year scholarship and was tipped for big things.

However, things didn’t work out for the prolific striker at Bolton and he was released following the club’s relegation from the Championship in 2016.

He then spent a couple of years at Burnley before spending time in non-league with Squires Gate, AFC Blackpool and Bamber Bridge.

Now, he has been given a second chance at Preston after scoring in a pre-season friendly against Accrington.

Alex Samizadeh

After joining Wanderers from Curzon Ashton, Alex Samizadeh impressed at Under-18 and Under-23 level.

There was lots of hype surrounding the Iranian forward but sadly things didn’t work out and he went on to make just two first-team appearances.

Samizadeh left the UniBol in the summer of 2017 to join Scottish side Kilmarnock and now plays for non-league Leatherhead.

Luca Connell

Luca Connell came through Wanderers’ academy and broke into the first team in the 2018/19 campaign.

The Bolton News:

The midfielder’s performances didn’t go unnoticed, and he was soon called up for a Republic of Ireland training camp.

However, Connell was prized away from the UniBol by Scottish giants Celtic for a paltry £40,000 fee plus bonuses amid the club’s administration problems.

Tyler Garratt

After beginning his career at Lincoln City, Tyler Garratt was given a chance in the first team at Wanderers by Jimmy Phillips back in 2016.

The left back made three senior appearances but failed to nail down his place and was sold to Doncaster Rovers.

Garratt also had loan spells at Eastleigh and Wimbledon and is now playing for Welsh outfit Bangor City.

Regan Riley

Regan Riley impressed for Wanderers’ youth side and was given his first-team debut against Tranmere in the 2019/20 campaign.

He also featured against Shrewsbury in the Papa John’s Trophy last term but was sold to Norwich City for a reported £250,000 fee plus bonuses earlier this year.

Ian Evatt called the midfielder “a very talented player” but admitted the offer from the Canaries was too good to turn down.
